This week's prompt is:

Anyone can join, with a 50-word vignette in the comments. Your vignette does not have to include the prompt term.

My efforts:

"Look on the bright side of it, Mila," said Jannick. "It's not like we're on one of the warships that put down the pirates. Those were ill-fated missions, often enough."
Mila gave him a poisonous glare. "At least they got it over with. We could sail forever to no avail."

"We don't have to be so ill-fated as that," said Josette, quickly. "She might bring word." Everyone but Frederick looked at her, and she faltered. "Or," she added weakly, "Carolus might still get the message off."
"I needed those parts," said Carolus.
Lilac wondered who would say that they had go afoot, then.

Old Agnes came along peaceably enough, but muttered about how no fortress in the desert of giants could possibly be permanent, they were always ill-fated, the giants would always triumph in the end.
But she also snapped, "Move quickly. They will flood the tunnel before too long."
"Show us the way," said Lieutenant Smith. "That's quickest."

An ominous warning against an ill-fated expedition, how she had enemies who would thwart her.
"They aren't powerful enough to strike me in the kingdom," she mused, "so there is hope."
Jon cleared his throat. "Your Highness, they could create more contention by striking away from it."
"True," she said.
