Unicorn Crossing by Dana Simpson

The continuing adventures of a girl and her unicorn. . . .

Plans for Halloween; Dakota and her goblin friend Blaarthelomew; envy of snow; Marigold's going away with her sister for some days, and Phoebe's coping; Dakota's snide comments; interacting with her friend Max, and more.

Honor at Stake by Declan Finn

In New York City, Amanda Colt and Marco Catalano are attending college together, fencing against each other in a club, and making discoveries. One of which you may guess from the title: it's a vampire tale. Rather different vampires.

Which lead to complications. And adventures that involve vampire bars, a 19th century cop, quoting Thomas Aquinas, home-made napalm, Vatican ninjas, street gangs that aren't, and more.

Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson

Once upon a time, a girl skipped a stone across a lake, and hit a unicorn in the face. In gratitude (yes, that makes sense), the unicorn grants her a wish. A "something I can do for you" sort of wish, not a wishing ring sort.

In the Lamplight: The Fantastic Worlds of L. Jagi Lamplighter by L. Jagi Lamplighter

A varied collection of works. Some historical fantasy, some contemporary fantasy, some SF. One that, in the end, reveals itself to be mundane fiction.

I'm particularly fond of "Never Again the Same" and "Knight's Mate". Some are based in the same worlds as her other published works, but they stand alone.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling

An adventure of monsters and New York City. It pulls loose of Harry Potter's orbit; no mention of Voldemort at all. It's in Grindelwald's day -- they have wanted posters of him in the opening -- and it does mention Dumbledore once, in a logical situation. But it shifts the story entirely.

Iron Chamber of Memory by John C. Wright

A strange little tale -- very dream-like in the sense of actual dreams, not the "dreamy" of daydreams.

Dreams of Distant Shores by Patricia A. McKillip

A collection of her stories.  The style is as wonderful as always, but the stories themselves were uneven.  There's the novella Something Rich and Strange, about a couple and the sea creatures that come to them, and "The Gorgon in the Cupboard" about an artist and a model, which were the best.

Return by Aaron Becker

The triumphant conclusion of the trilogy! Yes, you do want to read the first books first to lead into this sweet wordless tale.

Again, the little girl can't get her father to play and so goes through the door to the wonder-world. This time, her father notices and follows. Her being unappeased is interrupted by the villains of the first two. Problems ensue, leading to an excellent conclusion.

An alternate history contemporary fantasy -- an urban fantasy with overt magic -- well, magic came back. Dragons roam the earth once more. And Detroit was engulfed by a massive wave and taken over the Lady of the Lakes as the Detroit Free Zone.
