a sequel looms

Haven't even finished the first sequel, and it's suggesting a third story in the sequence.

Suggesting it very vaguely. If one witch is taken out, the wicked stepmother can send her stepdaughter to this witch, but it won't work the same way. Probably -- she'll meet another witch?

Is it even a lone stepdaughter? I could send a pair of stepchildren, a son and a daughter. That's how vague it is.

Would be wiser to determine which of his parents, his mother or his father, is the one who is descended from the heroine of the first story. Even if it might make no difference. . . .

Nah, it will make a difference.  I think it has to be the father, because then I can have the hero talk about how you must never ever leave your bride after you have found her for fear she will be turned into a bird or murdered, and how his father sagely did that very thing. The other around doesn't offer convenient applicability.
