In a discussion of modern-day monsters and whether they should be more, not fewer, I suggested that they are sensible.

The rash ones got killed off, and the rest fear the fate of the dodo and the passenger pigeon.

The problem with that -- besides killing 90% of the urban fantasy genre -- is that the rash have been getting themselves killed for generations, and yet humans are still rash. Sometimes fortune favors the foolish. It would have to be very odd to not need enforcement because they are all cool with it.
