building up the land of nightmare
Off go the heroes, fighting monsters in a mountainous land.
Which is threatened, not trapped in the Evil Overlord's domain yet, so it's not a blighted wasteland.
Which means the monsters have to be that much more nightmarish to deepen their plight. Frolicking in flower-filled meadows is not the setting for nightmare without delicate handling.
Hmmm -- could show the Evil Overlord's lands in more detail -- hmm -- and perhaps outbursts of blight -- and hmmmmmmmmm -- I could have the powerful magical beings appeal to our heroes for help, which would really frighten them.
