There are lots of explainations for the customs. Unfortunately, they tend to be conjured up on the spot. Some are definitely impossible.
The thing is, oral history is highly unreliable. After a few generations, you do it because you do it, and then you fudge up a story for why.
I think it's the most unreliable form of primary source you can get, actually.
