Was some more thinking about creatures and their effects on metaphysics of world-building -- that is, how much metaphysics you have to slither in for certain creatures. I have observed before (like, here) that werewolves raise fewer questions than vampires, who raise fewer than angels or demons. . . .

Was philosophically contemplating the prospect of mixing up dragons and other such monsters with modern technology. . .

So let's suppose there's a world where the source of magic is clear, and clearly needed intelligence.

thinking about ghosts.

That's one creature that got seriously homogenized in pop culture.  There are legendary ghosts that are physically solid enough to engage in wrestling matches.  The grateful dead is solid enough that he can pass himself off as a living being until he chooses to reveal himself to the character who was his benefactor and whom he aided. . . .

Of course, the "always vaporous" trope would be of great use to a ghost trying to make his way in the modern world.

Was pondering the masquerade and realized -- what if the magical being were forced away as punishment?

It would leave a whole lot of the world-building questions open but still has its intriguing aspects

How to have the fantasy kitchen sink -- Greek gods here and elves and trolls there and over there a kitsune and a rakshasa playing tennis with Mother Goose characters watching from the sidelines-- without announcing to all and sundry that its's all fake, an omnium-gatherum that can't make sense.  It's interesting.

Building the masquerade and the magical worlds within it -- and I think there's going to be some humans hanging around in some, aware of the magical beings.

Not wizards -- well, not necessarily -- some might incidentally have some magic, but that's not why they are there.

I think I have concluded that they were people too tightly entwined with the magical creatures to be torn away.  As long as they are bound not to blurt out the truth when they meet the ignorant, and don't themselves realize there's more magical beyond -- so they don't go and become nuisances -- they can fit in nicely in the worlds of trolls or dragons.  Might not be fun for them, but it would work.

human, not

We have  werewolves and other shapeshifters, and the heroine -- I know her -- is going to contemplate the others.  The dragons, the trolls -- if I put 'em in, the mermaids --

Was pondering the possibility of different kinds of magical beings hiding themselves from the mundane -- and each other -- and realized that a selective withdrawal did not have to mean hiding from each other.
