So how far is it to the dragon?
Different dragon -- possibly even a different color, like puce, though the point of view character will probably think "dried blood" -- and on stage.
The big question is how closely can a dragon live to human settlements? Going back to the folklore, it could often live just on the border because it's all coiled up about its treasure and not trying to add to it.. . . (so does it get it in the first place? are you expecting coherent world-building from folklore?)
This one's a trifle more active than that, and also there are other monsters.
But the distance will determine how far the other characters have to travel, and how much has to happen along the way to be plausible
