Trudging along on the journey the children are going on.
Developing the ideas and realizing that the whole purpose of it is to scare them. To see if they can be scared off. Not just to show them the wide world and the wonders of it.
Which means that there are several points where the cameo appearing characters have to act menacing, even if not to the children.
Fortunately, they are ordering the encounters so that the decree of danger will increase
