Betrothed. For a moment, Nigel thought of going to the stone to ask, but it did not behoove a prince to pester a stone for explanations. Perhaps she would have turned spiteful and dangerous that way. Once she was in place, she could ossify with the rest of the fools.
She smiled at him. He could not blame her. He had gone to the ball and intrigued with the rest. But he could prove that he had not ossified with the rest of them. He too could be bold and brave, and not wholly bound by the nonsense of society.
