wandering monsters
Talk happens. Long term strategy, deep heart-to-heart, instruction.
BUT -- there has been trouble around every corner. The villains and monsters aren't going to stop merely because the story is coming to a crisis.
So, they need some wandering monsters. Also some clues from the Big Bad, whom they are all aware of but not how Bad she is -- which will look like wandering monsters at first.
Hmm. Or perhaps -- what the Big Bad is doing could legitimately decrease the number of monsters about. And villains. Particularly villains. That could be a Useful Clue
