Estelle nibbled at the porridge, trying not to look too miserable. Back home, breakfast was bacon and eggs, or thick ham slices.

But Mrs. Daggert said that meat was "too stimulating" for a young lady, that it excited the passions. She would eat bland food based on grains, never mind that telepaths needed far more concentrated energy sources than a plant-based diet could provide.

Estelle's father had understood, had seen to it that his daughter received both the nourishment and the training to make the most of her extraordinary gifts. But now both of her parents were dead in an airship crash, and she must perforce live here, under this distant relative who had very definite ideas about propriety -- ideas formed before the Late Unpleasantness, before the explosive changes in technology and society that had come in its wake.
