A woman approached from behind him. Older than the man, who, Honor realized, looked no older than she was. Then she realized that although the woman stepped as if she were walking, she cross far more distant than she should have with each step. She smiled benignly on Honor. "Welcome."
She turned to face her, and her mother scowled. "Go to your room. If you are not well, you should beg off such expedition. It's absurd to miss the year because you have made yourself ill." Violetta murmured assent and hurried off. Her heart hammered. She had think clearly, quickly.
Three flights of stairs might not be quite as much in 1/6 g as back on Earth, but taking them in such rapid succession had left me winded. Sure, I'd kept up with the mandatory exercise regimen, but this sudden burst of exertion made me realize just how often I'd focused on doing enough, rather than really working out.
