inheritance and other adventures

So what were those two characters doing during those years?

Twins of noble birth, but the evil empress -- suggests that the terms of the inheritance are such that she can not possibly recognize them as heirs. (There are two inheritances, and one has to belong to each one, but she can weasel about being unable to figure out which.)

However, given her style, she insinuates it. She does not seize the inheritance. And she can -- hmmm -- get away with this in the prologue because both of them are underage. (Positively committing herself to doing something removes leverage.)

I think the family's servants will continue to look after the twins' in the country house, having been ordered to not bring them to the city. (To avoid their being pawns in intrigue, says the empress.) And they will have to have just come of age when the bulk of the story begins. Perhaps I can give them some unusual instructors in the countryside.

Whereupon they set out, bright-eyed and eager, to find magic that will let them prove to the empress which one is which heir.

And here I was thinking that making it multi-point of view required more backstory. Nah, I would have had to figure this out either way.
