tidbits cross time

In Nineveh, it was held to be a good omen if black ants were seen about a new foundation -- the house would be built and the owner would live to ripe old age. But if a fox ran through a public square, the town would be devastated.

In two estates in 18th century Sweden, some women -- widows -- could vote as burghers or as peasants, though burghers later removed the right. (Peasants debated but decided farm-owning widows should keep the vote.)

The Hyksos introduced the horse to Egypt. They also practiced burying a horse in elite burials, which conclusively identifies their tombs.

Greek and Roman writers include pre-battle speeches by generals. Although they can't be literally what was said, among the other reasons to believe they are at similar is that the speeches are not written up to conform to the formal requirements of rhetoric.

A French proverb holds that bad singing brings rain.

At the beginning of the Ming dynasty, there was a concerted effort to bring the country back to village autarky. In particular, taxes had to be paid in kind or labor, not in coin.

Although George I was the first British king named George, it was considered a good name because of St. George.

The Roman Republic was at war about ninety percent of the time. For comparison, the states in China's Warring States were all at peace about a quarter of the period.

The Parsley Massacre was so named because -- it was said -- the soldiers of the Dominican Republic would hold up parsley and ask the suspected Haitian what it was, and by this shibboleth tell whether the person was Haitian.

China during the fourth and fifth century saw considerably more conflict over control of people than of land. Mass resettlement to the core of where you controlled China was commonplace.

During the conflict between the Baltic tribes and the Teutonic knights, Lithuanians once spared a captive archer on the condition he would teach them the use of the cross bow.

The Sumerian list of kings includes "Kug-Bau, the woman tavern-keeper, who made firm the foundations of Kish." She is the only queen on the list.

Jeremy Bentham cited, as an example of the irrational antipathy utilitarianism opposes, how James I claimed that tobacco smoke was dangerous to the lungs.

Chinese expatriates in regions conquered by Spain or Portugal could expect no sympathy or help from China, even when they were the victims of massacre.

A medieval work warned against dyeing your daughter's hair red and so presage her for the fires of hell.

There is a tribal proverb in North America: the grass remembers the horse. And in fact, feral burros and mustangs easily slipped back into the ecological niche that the now extinct equines had held.

India reformed its state lines in order to make them conform more closely to linguistic boundaries, owing to disputes over official languages.

During the Pacific War, scouting aircraft made fewer accurate reports about enemy fleets than inaccurate ones.

Tiberius declined the offer to have a month named as him as two were after Julius and Augustus Caesar, on the grounds that they would have had twelve emperors in due course.

Nobles and knights could pay fees for being let off their feudal duties to serve in war. The Magna Carta forbids the king to force them to do so instead of serving themselves.

The grammar of the Pacific War entry is awkward, as is the Magna Carta entry, which I had to read twice to figure out.

And the Hyksos introduced the chariot, not just horses. Before then, all Egyptian forces were foot soldiers, whether slingers or common mace-wielders.

Y' know, I could have been much more civil in saying the above.  I was merely troubleshooting:  “I found the following problems…”

I do apologize.
