Death Before Dragons book 1.
An urban fantasy series. With overt if much ignored magic.
Val, our heroine, is hunting down a killer wyvern, the last of three, with her magical gun and sword, and the aid of her magical tiger. (She does it for the government.) This is enlivened by the surprising appearance of a dragon, who wants to take the wyvern back to another world for rehabilitation. Val nevertheless succeeds, to the dragon's anger.
She returns to find that her contact in the army has, suddenly, terminal cancer, and there's investigations going. The rest involves krakens, an alchemist, a very tall man who's a quarter dwarf, a vial that shows a sigil when heated, and more.
