Juggling two outlines -- trying to keep them traveling in separate lines -- and the one that seemed to have more of a story has proven -- sketchy.   The heroine has to solve problems, but that means I have to define the problems.

Meanwhile the other one is revealing that there are animal themes among the magic involved.  Go figure.

So there I was with the hero having a handy place to exposit on certain principles of magic and their application.

So naturally the muse invents a bit of potted history that expands on it nicely and explains that one of the youngsters has heard of it and thought it just a story, giving a hook. . . .

One way to get the wordage.

You have an elemental well-spring to power your abilities as a magical knight, and you have a dominion that determines what they are. You can have a well-spring of earth, and use fire powers as your dominion. No relationship.

Except, I decide, since some powers are opposed, they are impossible. A well-spring of earth can do earth powers, fire powers, water powers, plant powers, the original dominion of just being fast and strong, and more. But not air.

So I was fooling around with the magic of the world -- the rarer your power source the more power you can draw -- and wondering whether you could draw from rain rather than water in general. . . .

Naturally a blog post about magic without an order tempted the muse. There are going to be two polarities in the system, and consequently four groups.

Our hero is an odd-ball with no affinity leading to his being able to do all sorts of things. He's going to have to go through them all. But at least four is a rational size for the story.

Figured out why some plot bunnies are not forming a plot.

If you have an idea about a hero who has to go through various kinds of magic and discover which one will solve a problem -- well, I know what the problem is.  I know what the type of magic is.  I even have some other types to mislead him.

The problem is that there has to be some system to plot them so he knows it's exhaustive.  Also, I don't like random laundry lists of odd-ball magics.

Hmmm -- I may have specialists in light magic and darkness magic, and then generalists.

The hero is about to kill another evil wizard living under the protection of the king's knights.

Was pondering the question of vigilantism in my high fantasy superhero work.   Decided to allude to it.

There's a superpower -- well, a magical prowess (I may change that term) -- where a knight can pass from one place to another without going through the intervening distance. They call it leaping. Sometimes they can take other people, and things as well.

Was pondering the sources of the magical knights' powers.

I have put in something about how some are more powerful than others. Those being more difficult for a wizard to master, or harder for a knight to recharge. Earth is popular though weak because the only real way to shut you off is to stuff you on a sea-going vessel for a pelagic journey where you never ever come to shore.

A royal character who does not become a wizard -- and the amount of study means that course is discouraged -- becomes a magical knight.

Does he, or even a noble character, get more say than others in the power set he will get?

It occurred to me: a magical knight can, if of strong enough character, influence how his powers manifest. A sufficiently hot-tempered and impulsive candidate may manifest fire powers even if the wizard tried to make him a water wizard.

Hmmm -- if you can use magic drawing on death to do any sort of spellwork -- does that mean that necromancers can devise spells that other wizards can use?

Contemplating the source -- er -- fuel of powers for the magical knights. And wizards, come to think of it.
