It starts with her having to use makeup on her boss to make him look like a commoner. And then go with him, also in disguise. Following that other threads from earlier books have influence. The creepy man with an eyepatch reveals definite facts and more clues about Maomao's background, though not to her. An official tells her there are more questions about something she investigated earlier.
And the ending is quite a shock.
