something happens here

When working on an outline, I need it to be detailed enough.
Some writers perhaps can put in "something happens here" but even though at this point I know that two characters are going to chase after something under the impression it's the protagonist. I need to know what "something" is or it will really bog down the writing, and may also throw off the rest of the plotline ahead. And also I need to know what blows up in their absence.
Even though it's just a plot device so the leader of their team can go to the king and say, "You need to transfer these hotheads somewhere where the enemies are easier to detect and more straightforward." (And then I have to decide whether the king says, "Does this have something to do with the criminal whose apprehension you think may be delicate?")
