Some people can write scenes out of order.

I do that, and I generally manage to miss the scene when plodding on toward the ending.   So I write in order.

Now, on doing outlines, I take notes, which can be in any order.  And sometimes they make it into the story, and sometimes they don't -- less painful than working out a scene and finding it doesn't fit, to be sure.

The latest outline is so complex that I've written parts of it out of order.

Thus far, nothing's been left out.  Still, it's been a farrago of cross signals.  Oops, she can't suggest they could help him, because she doesn't know of his existence.  Whoops, he wouldn't just show up there, I had rightfully had the children only, and that twist turns on that, but he might show up right after it, because he had been scouting for trouble.  Or just keeping watch to test whether to trust them.

Meanwhile, is the little girl whose origin they can't trace going to turn out to be significant?  Because there were other kids whose origins they couldn't really trace who were quite ordinary in origins.  But the little girl is a little more mysterious than most.
