Sword of Sorrow, Blade of Joy by J.F. Lee
Adventures among the lakes and rivers, as they call the martial arts world in China. It starts with a runaway girl trying to hire a swordsman to escort her home.
At least, to where her parents lived, after she ran away from the brothel that had bought her. She talks him over, but after she gets to the village, her parents are long gone, and there are problems there. Some adventures, too, and she learns some things that inspire her to go on with him.
He doesn't quite have the heart to leave her behind, and she starts negotiating for him. People assume she's his daughter, and he doesn't always correct them. There are adventures and bandits and fights. There's a bounty on her head. There's a magistrate who's the last other survivor of the school where the swordsman learned, and there's the swordsman's desire to avenge the death of the master and the other students, all murdered.
There are definite internal stories in this. (It reads as if published in part.) But it flows as a story.
