We were just staking down our sales canopy when the western sky started turning black. I yelled for the hurricane ropes, but nobody could seem to find them.

Nothing to do but find them myself. As I expected, both hurricane ropes were in plain sight, but away from the regular ropes.

I got the second one fastened to its stakes just as the gust front hit. With the hurricane ropes keeping the top from lifting, we were able to ride out the storm. It wasn’t fun, but we still had a canopy when it was time to set up our store fixtures and set out merchandise. Several other vendors weren’t so lucky, and had to make emergency runs to acquire a replacement canopy.

When we returned home, I called an all-hands meeting, and went over procedures with all our teams. Not just routine setup and operations, but also safety and emergency procedures. I did not want any of my people dealing with the disaster I narrowly averted.
