transitions and other troubles

We are told that Bilbo had trouble returning home after the adventures in The Hobbit, but of course, we don't see anything because it would be anti-climax.
It's interesting when the hero went off to do something in the middle of the story, did it, and got back, basically without incident, and I have to segue into the consequences, with as little dead weight transition as possible.
