characters in setting of monsters

Thing is, just because I know what they are heading out on a certain adventure doesn't mean they are optimized for it. They were, all of them, blindsided more or less -- even the prince who set up the mission because of the need (which I will need to elaborate. . . .) They could not have prepared.
Therefore, their histories will determine their spell lists, mostly with an eye to what they would find useful on the sorts of adventures they had before. Lucky for them that the region they are in has some commonalities.
So what I need to know is what sort of monsters haunt this setting. A number that can not be hit except with magical weapons -- so much that it's considered insane to adventure without a magical weapon -- but other than that --
And all of this for backstory to determine the magic to determine how the fights go
