Something moved in the air.
If he did not know his powers were volitional, Gregor might have thought he moved the vectors himself. The power was like his, very like his.
Except that after a moment, he realized it was far too intricate to be his work. After several he realized that the pattern also was unmoving.

Whoever had made those metallic rose vines had not stinted. Every leaf had its veins, every prickle joined to the stem, every detailed heart of those single roses.
It was not here for the love of beauty, Rosine knew. Then she hesitated. It might. If the maker was mad enough.

"She hasn't sworn," said Orlando grimly. "She is just a hireling. And do not tell me that is just a detail. If it were so trivial, she would have no problem having sworn. Long ago."
"I'll swear within the hour," said Minette. "Since it is so urgent. Ma will understand."

Margery shrugged. "Mistress Escolastica told us they don't always, but she never told us how to tell when."
Phoebe's voice was very cold. "When you know the spell so absolutely that you know all the details, you will know which matter."

Reginald stepped out blinking in the sun. He walked automatically down to where his daughter Alice held his horse. How could he atone for last night? He never meant harm by the jests, but the count ...
Something seemed amiss. There were ribbons on the reins. That was Alice for you. But something else--he finally saw it, and cried "What did you do?"
"It's called 'docking'," Alice answered.
