Imogene turned away "At that, I lack your confidence that I was caught by chance in their desire to be rid of the prince. I remember altogether too many strange visitors and late night conferences in the last year." She shrugged. "I might dream myself more important than I am."

Even from across the clearing, the bearman loomed, and his black fur and fierce glower did not help as he stalked toward them.
"Good morning, Caradoc," said Guillaume. "Do you look for room for a night?"
"I will stay longer, to show you what you should have known," he growled.

"We had a visitor," said Carolus. The shadows cast across his face made him look grim. "Nothing so vulgar as a messenger with orders, though I have received them by the score and done my duty. No, a visitor who intimidated that we must learn what lies in the Conundrum."

"They're not supposed to do this," said Nico. "They are supposed to be hos -- pitable toward us, as visitors, because we are the wizards who can stand against the evil ones."
"We haven't done that yet," said Phoebe.
Margery raised her chin. "We'll do it faster if they treat us right."

Juanita helped him wash his face and thread his arms into the grey cardigan.
“She’s coming today, you know.” He patted down the few white whips.
Juanita smiled and answered “Say hello to her for me.” She helped him into the chair facing the door, refilled his glass, and quietly left.

He counted the locks again: three deadbolts, two latches, and a brace. The shutters blocked most of the moonlight, and a wedge jammed them closed.

He clutched the silver-plated butter knife he had “borrowed” from the deSilvas. The room smelled of garlic and artemisia. Would any of it would work?

“I wish we had a letter of introduction. This is so awkward.”

“Unless you can get a medium to have the squire write one, we’re going to have to rely on my wits and your beauty to get us in the door.”

“You have a plan, then?”

“Part of one.”
