The fireworks for the new prince's birth blazed like nothing he had ever imagined before. At first he cowered from the bangs, but the showers of colorful fire left him rapt, forgetting his fear.

"This is only the start," his aunt said. "Wait until the magicians begin!"

The royal elven court would never have looked like this. Courtiers would have worn more delicate shades, of blues and grays and greens. Not the brilliant, bold reds and golds, and true blue, and vivid green.
She had to dress as brightly, thought Illys. To show she was no ambassador.

The rose garden was brilliant with bloom, in red, pink, and white. She had seen so little like this in this land. It was so much more prone to be colorful in spots. Even capering jesters in the streets wore a red scarf rather the vivid motley of her homeland.

The gathering was an assembly of white tunics with the colorful bands about wrist and throat. Odd that there were so many, paladins and rogues and wizard and priests.
From the brightness of the white, very few of them had worn their tunics since they had sworn their own oaths.

No bruises marred his skin. The injection sites where they had drugged him showed no signs.
He had felt the injections. It was not a sign that he had invulnerability (and he should have known that from the way he could still feel things). So, healing. But things still hurt.

Imogene carefully tied back her hair with a red ribbon.
Mistress Joan laughed. "You don't imagine that the colors are why the sorcerers always turn mad?"
"I don't imagine," said Imogene, "that we know that they are not."
Corridon's eyes narrowed. Imogene sound far too old, though she was right.

The inside was colorful, and Aidan blinked.
"Ho!" called Roberto cheerfully. "Got ourselves a pile of gold or something?"
"I wish we had something so easy to exchange," said Aidan.
Roberto laughed again, and Carrigiana said something about making change for gold, when they stepped in, and saw the gemstones.

She wondered if there were anything colorful in this land. Gray skies. Gray lakes, reflecting them. Leafless trees with black bark. Even the path, beaten down by many feet, was a dingy brown, like the dead leaves rotting under the branches.
At least she was not wearing her yellow raincoat.
