"What can she do?" said Alba. "Did you ask that? Can she cast light spells?"
"Can you?" said Minette.
"Of course," said Alba.
"Well, then," said Minette. "You hardly need me as well."
Elise cleared her throat. "She has lightning powers. And can survive the weather, which will be useful."

"Besides," said a red-haired young priest, "there is only so much that he can be taught. Let him fare forth. He can learn the folly of shedding light near the monster's lair in battle."
Robert scowled. He'd learn it from a good beating, if he did not stop long before.

Tiffany shrieked, fighting against Jacob's grip.
"You'll only fall over yourself!" he shouted.
The glow came first. Jacob's hand loosened in surprise, but Tiffany only took a single step forward before that diamond-blue light had her go still.
Then the glow began to rise. Tiffany's hands went to her face.

The light had to come from somewhere.
But she could not see where.
Linnet trudged along, not looking about. The road twisted, rose, and sank so often that she looked in every direction, without seeing where.
She was on a bridge when she realized that actually, it didn't have to.

"At least air will be no problem," said Marian, cheerfully. "I've seen Rosine intimidate swirls of colored light, but it was the goblins that were most impressive. The red ones, the ones they called dracokin."
Rosine winced, remembering those fire-loving goblins, and how they stole calves, lambs, chicks, and babies.

The beam was so bright he saw Terry's bones through his limbs. Even with his eyes closed they hurt, and the heat left him weak. He could feel a hot breeze beginning to stir behind him as he tried to scramble away, anywhere. It followed them. A tumbleweed tripped him.
