Giants of Pangaea by John C. Wright
Lost on the Last Continent book 2. Spoilers for the first book ahead.
It opens with Lost flying through the air with the superscience ring. After some adventures (and backstory), he meets up with a jade statue -- who is really a living man, Eien, the last of the Fourth Men, the Phantoms. He tells Lost much and predicts much of his future, over his objections. Eien also tells Lost that meeting him will be Eien's death.
It goes on. It involves pirates, Lost's deducing which race of man a person he meets is, being helped by someone he met in the last book and can now talk with, a device which protects him as valuable property, a burst of chronological patriotism on Lost's part, and more.
