A knock sounded on the door. She frowned. She hadn't sent for delivery, and Cecily was at work, and Jane on her trip.
Apollos slumped against the door frame. He raised his head as she opened the door, and fell inside, his feet sprawling over the threshold as he collapsed.

"Here's a secret route," said Brian, cheerfully.
Autumn looked at him with narrowed eyes. "Walter showed me it. It kills you."
Brian nodded. "It will kill anyone who doesn't know the secret. But of what use is a secret route when you can't use it to get out, or in?"

"So that is the question. What lies inside the Conundrum's labyrinth?" Carolus sat back. "And that knowledge is what we must obtain. Therefore, we have need of magic that can shrink us small enough to fit into its notorious small center."
Rosine swallowed. "I'll go," she said, her voice small.

"Why," Jared snorted. "Will I find a grenade ready to blow?"

"No," Wellmy said as calmly as she could. "Just letters."

"I'm supposed to be afraid of letters?" Jared twisted the catch.

"I did not say anything about being afraid."

Stella opened the door and poured a short libation on the sill. Some nights she could almost see the two-faced guardian of the threshold; one face looking out and the other watching inside. Tonight she faintly saw a face, grim as though he knew what she was about to do, and disapproved.
