the thread of the traitor

So who betrayed the character?
The real problem here is that, actually, that was less of a problem than a plot device.
A character was badly hurt, frightening the other characters, and as a consequence, they didn't trust other characters and had to act alone. The traitor had no other plot significance, and indeed was not the one who injured the character; that was the work of someone they already knew was the villain.
Still, I don't think they would just dismiss the traitor, because while they know it could be nothing more than carelessness, they also know it could be witting accessory to murder. Fortunately, they can discover the identity when going through the villain's papers, and even the motive. (The traitor is not going to be a second villain, but someone who can be dealt with off-stage.
But I need, of course, to set up the traitor, and not produce him out of nowhere.
I think I'm going back to a scene where many wizards came together and talked. I think I can probably work out something from the personalities displayed there.
