After a prologue flash-back to her childhood --
Opal's curse crashes into her latest job, and then her mother shows up, redoing her apartment to her mother's taste, not Opal's own. And Opal has dinner with her friend Peter (after the events of the last book), and tries to work out how to pay her father on time.
