"Not everyone trained here is meant to remain here," said Bernard, his voice as smooth as oil. "Some set sail across the vast expanse of the world, to do the work of the Light in regions where training can not be done, because of the darkness there."
Angela sat still.

Lise stepped into the boat. Her foot must have pushed against the bank, the boat shifted into the stream, or else magic moved it. As gracefully as a swan, without oar or sail, the boat floated into the center of the stream and onward.
Downstream. Upstream would show more magic.

The skipper shielded his eyes and squinted at the nick on the horizon. "Reckon that's Mount Teil right there. Ain't I a prime navigator?" The mate followed his gaze, then called aloft. The hail came back directly. “Sail four points to starboard, and she flies the red flag! Gods save us!”

Always complications

"That easy. Throg blow."

And he did. The sail billowed and the mast bent. Suddenly the sail ripped and flapped and the mast sprang back, whipping ropes around.

At the same time the strained poop deck rail snapped and Throg fell backwards overboard as the boat jumped a ship's-length forward.

Jack sat in a heap of sail mending the tears.

Throg contemplated the rope.

"Throg try again. Throg hold rope in water. Throg blow, you pull Throg near."

Captain Corcoran thought a while. "It'd be slow, but it'd work." He sounded surprised.

"Many things Throg not know, but not stupid."
