"What else could we see?" said Bellangre.
A hole in the roof could open, thought Rosine, and sand could start pouring in on us like an hourglass, only one with people who could be crushed to death by the fall.
She said nothing.
"Challenges worthy of our steel," said Marian.

They crossed the bridge. Edwin looked down to see the fish skitter away from his shadow on the sandy bottom. Swans glided graciously down the river, and water lilies bloomed rosy pink in the backwaters.
The boy would find adventures rather different than this pleasant land, he had to admit.

"Don't be a fool. Some will fell you, and leave you to recover from your wounds. That's to lure you into a false sense of safety. Others will tear at you until you're bleeding shreds, or your companions have beaten it into sand because it is made out of stone."

The light from the chapel sent rays down on the water as the boat floated forward and into the radiance. Autumn stared at the light. She could see a resplendent form in there.
A grinding sound stirred her, and she realized that the boat had struck the shore, fortunately sand.

He fell to his knees at the foot of the ladder and ran his hand through the sand, staring at it falling through his fingers.

"Welcome back, First Explorer," the radio called. "Are you well?"

"At last!" he answered. "Cold sleep is a lie. I was awake the whole time."
