She pulled off her shoes and stockings and put them in the willow while Julian shed his own. Then she started across the stream in the green shade. The water barely covered her feet. She wondered whether it was the dry summer or her own growth.
Perhaps her memory was off, and it had not come to her knees before.

They didn't need the sergeant to warn them not to stop. He flexed his aching shoulders and fingered the pack's straps. It gave the illusion of relief, for a moment. The soldier in front of him stunk. He tried to think of anything but his feet. His blisters had blisters.

"Don't watch where you put your feet," said Brian. "You have to learn to feel it out. Otherwise you will overbalance yourself and fall."
Autumn gulped. He should not have said that when she was half-way down the wall.
Up will be easier, she told herself, moving her foot downward.

The sound of feet on the stairs broke into her thoughts. The room was abruptly silent as they all looked at each other.
"Coming with an offer of a task?" said Hesperia.
"Even someone who could afford us would be more tactful," said Ellyn. "They'd know that we aren't desperate."
