The birches were already losing their leaves, filling the air with fluttering gold. On the hillsides, there were great expanses of green, with gold here and there, despite the heat of the day.
Ava walked around the house on the north side, in the shade. Wind blew leaves by her.

Autumn ran a hand through her hair. It caught a leaf. She grimaced and pulled it out. No one would take her for a student up late if she looked like a wild woman of the woods who had strayed too far.
She should move as swiftly as she could.

The leaves, on inspection, looked sharpened, not just from the thinness of the metal. She glanced about. Everyone else studied the roses with narrowed eyes.
Carolus took a step forward, and nothing about them shifted. Rosine wondered how many of them had to be lured close before it would strike.

The freezing fog made it look like the birches were budding already—but all in white. His blinking, blurring eyes found it hard to tell where the trees ended and the skies began. Yesterday's snow looked fresh enough to eat. When he stopped, his sled bumped the back of his shins.
