She sighed. She needed Ava in a class where she could meet children of her own station. It was all very well to talk about how they could not play with commoner children for fear they would learn the spells those children learned, and which they could not, with their powers, master, but it was quite another to deal with a vivacious and solitary child. If only Ava had been born closer to her brothers, or she had had another child after.
She's old enough, Millefleur reminded herself. School will help because she has a chance to befriend suitable children.

First, to get past the guard. A thief spell would work well as long it affected only those people expected to sleep. They would notice the guards. Then, he faced only the windows.
He smiled and leapt the gap. Reynardette had chosen well when she came to him for help.

He closed his eyes and felt for it. In this, at least, he had listened to his tutors and followed faithfully. The times his magics burst loose had been terrifying enough to make him want to master the spells and cast them of his own will.
This one felt odd.

"Did you expect that the Elder Tongue would use the patois of the marketplace? Oh no, child. You must learn entirely new sounds, with new symbols and new accents."

Gilliam swallowed hard. "Entirely?"

"Well, the long-E sound is the same. And, strangely enough, the word 'stone' is almost the same."
