"I learned to cook," said Ava. "You don't set the fire in the stones yourself, you buy them, or have the stonecrafter come to fix yours. I couldn't roast a chicken, but I could bake bread." She smiled. "I could find a job in a kitchen if I ran away."

"Don't they always just go by birth?" said Autumn. "Because at that point, it being impossible to tell, you just have to choose someone."
"Ah, but to do that, you have to tell the empress. That frightens all of them off from the prospect. Including you, if you are wise."

"Chicken soup for dinner," said old Beth, bustling in with a tray. "And that sweet bread that you like so much, and a stewed strawberries. Can you sit up, poppet?"
"Yes," said Alun, before he tried. If he hesitated, she would come to help before he could. He struggled up.

A fair-haired woman stood by the table as they came in. She smiled at Aidan, but it grew more hesitant as she looked at the others.
Edwin looked her over. "A paladin of protection," he said.
"Oh, yes."
"No one told them anything," said Aidan.
She grimaced. "My name is Imogene. They had me train with Aidan. Since he is ready, they think I might as well return to protecting the kingdom actively."
Robert nodded. Carrigiana folded her arms.
"The cook said they have roast chicken for us."
"Fancy living," murmured Edwin.
"Enjoy it while you've got it," said Robert.

The goodwife curtsied and left. He whispered, "Benedict, this is tougher than boiled leather!"

"Smile anyway. They killed their chicken for you."

"It's terrible! Why did the mare have to go lame? And why did my uncle have to take his family on a leaky boat?"

"You're the king now. Noblesse oblige."
