Ava looked at the wood. About her, everyone had reduced theirs to cinders. She thought she might have scorched it. A little.
She stepped forward and looked. Her lip trembled. The smoke she smelled was all the other pupils' work. Her finger traced it. She could do earth. A little.

Autumn swallowed, and Brian laughed, low in his throat.
"It's not like burning down the house with them inside," he pointed out. "It's not even going to leave them scorched. It will even give them a better night's rest than they could get without it. And give us some freedom."

As clear as if the name of the place she dreamed of were scorched into the wood.
Though she did not know the place she had dreamed of, and whether it had a name.
Angela sighed. Waking up was supposed to end the dream. She walked on. Toward the dream.

We walked into the testing grounds. Large portions of stone walls had scorch marks on them. I swallowed. At least no one was testing anything, I told myself, but in truth, what I noticed that they stared at me instead.
"A new one!" caroled a man in a brown robe.

“It’s time for Drake’s injection.”
The intern resignedly opened the drawer of scale-piercing needles. “If you don’t lasso his jaws tighter this time I’ll empty the rest of this in you.”
“Don’t worry,” the vet tech said. She started cranking the cage ceiling down. “You know, you look more distinguished without eyebrows.”
