It was not every day that you asked a girl to marry you, he told himself, and that you held out the bait of a royal crown did not make it more common.
His mouth still felt dry. He did not reach for the ring for fear of fumbling it.

Still, she could not marry any of them, she told herself. That attraction was the privilege of the ball alone. Humming a little under her breath, she skipped along the way, wondering whom her brothers had decided she would dance with. She could dance better than automata, which would help.

"Watch out for these posters," said Jack, looking grim. "We don't know where they come from, but we do know they are trouble. The monsters are always the worst of the worst. Most adventurers get eaten."
"So," I said, "these are bait?"
Everyone looked shocked and horrified to my surprise.

"You are all fools," said the woman.
Tell me something I didn't know, thought Angela.
"The dreams are bait and nothing but bait. The labyrinth is alive and will eat you all. The only people who survive are those who wise up. Or who begin wise and never go in."
