"If you wish." He held out his arm, and she rose, very carefully, afraid to appear even a little unsteady, and took it.
"We can visit the roses," he said, imperially. "I will protect you from how prickly they are."
He seemed calm enough, she thought. Perhaps it had been a mad fancy.

"What? What sort of use is a class where you don't even know what it does? Did you think you could live off the rest of us?" She put her hands on her hips and leaned forward. "We're not rich here. They give us the best, but that's not fancy."

"These things can get awkward," he confessed. "Perhaps they are a test of whether calm prevails at difficult hours, or whether you grow sullen, or prickly."
"Or perhaps whether he does," said Autumn, merrily.
Brian lifted an eyebrow.
"Come, brother. The finest alliance turns on the bridegroom's character, and honor."

Karl's eyebrow went up. Tristan looked quizzically at her. Angela wondered if that had come out more prickly than she intended. These would be her companions, unless she gave the thing up entirely.
"Prudent of you," said Celestine. "Thinking no more of what lies behind, let us all look ahead."

“Are you intimating that my climate control is inferior?” His tone was calm, but Alan shivered.

“No, never,” Alan stammered. “I only thought to make small talk, about subjects nobody usually cares about.”

“So you wanted to waste my time with small talk?”

“No, I’m sorry I wasn’t clear.” Alan silently cursed Laia for not warning him.
