The sunlight was gone. The daylight was dark gray with the clouds looming over them, the billows filled with blackness. Far off and distant came the rumble of thunder, very deep and strong. Ava swallowed. She had not seen the lightning, but it must have been strong for such thunder.

The sky rumbled. Ciara frowned. It was one thing to sit by the window and think melodramatic thoughts about how no one would venture out in this weather, but quite another to see a figure stealing down the street. He did not try to sneak, she thought, but it was so dark she could not be sure.

A sound like thunder rumbled ahead, but there were no clouds in the sky except the very faintest of white wisps.
"Now there's a useful power," said Ross. "Perhaps yours will be as good as the earthquake master."
"Do they do demolition work?" I said.
Ross and Emma both laughed.

Outside thunder rolled.
"Ignore it," said Karl. "It's always cloudy, and it never rains. Let alone has lightning strikes."
"And thunder is harmless in itself," noted Tristan.
"But they always have enough water," said Celestine. "It's as mad as anything else about this place."
"Then let us discuss what we can do."
