Karlus had a bag, and felt mildly surprised that he had found anything to put in it. No clothing, of course, since he would travel in a day, and no clothes that he wore here were fitting for a city, and he had little in way of tokens of remembrance.

They wandered on. Ava asked questions now and again, and he thought he managed to remember all the flower names correctly, and she nodded and repeated them as if to commit them to memory. Perhaps she actually fancied gardens.
There were worse places to woo her than gardens, he thought.

Which meant the question of what she could do. They still needed Tristan's, too, but there was no reason why she could not go first. It was not as if it were difficult to remember.
"I serve the church. I can heal, and strengthen, and fight with both magic and steel."
"Did they give you blessed weapons?" said Tristan. Innocently, she thought.
"No," she said. She had not asked for supplies of any kind, and was glad that she would not have the remembrance of their refusal.
The imagination of it, summoned up by Tristan's question, was quite bad enough.

Through another doorway, I could see skulls on shelves. Dozens upon dozens of skulls, grinning.
Over the door was written "Eram quod es; eris quod sum." A remembrance, then, though I was surprised to see that someone who had arrived here knew the Latin and used it instead of English.
