She stared at him. She would no doubt have bruises, and he had no words, but he pointed, mutely, as his heart hammered. A rake, tongs up, on the path, just where she would have set her foot, and have it hit her in face.
He could rescue her from a rake, if not a dragon. The rake was the actual danger, and would have been bad enough if she were in the bloom of health.
"Where are the gardeners here?" he shouted. She stared at the rake, and pulled back. He should call a maidservant, but the gardeners, first.

"How was your journey?"
"Nothing interfered with it," said Karlus with precision. The birds had, after all, merely seemed to glare at him. They had not lasted half way into the forest, let alone into the city.
"Good. We have little time. You must be ready by the first dance."

Angela let out her breath slowly. She could hope they were truthful. She could cast spells to verify it, once she gain more skill, at which point she would no doubt have learned the hard way if they were liars in any important matter.
This did not affect her duty.

"If only because our eyes will be honest," said Karl. "Meet a dragon on the way, and we know there's a dragon, even if it's an illusionary one. Tales of dragons are worse: fictitious rather than illusionary."
"There are tales of a dragon," said Tristan. "But no one claims to have met it."

"I came here to see if we could learn what I can do," I said.
"And you are?"
"A metaphysician."
She blinked. "Almost as bad as me. I'm a swashbuckler."
"But you don't have a buckler."
"And she was a real pain, figuring out what she could do with that."
