marycatelliSometimes you rip off an idea from a work.
It doesn't have to something like pulling the characters or the plot or both, that you would need to file the serial numbers off hard, even if your motive is that they just ruined a great idea. Sometimes you think, hmm, what if you couldn't put that type of character up against that problem, but had to use these characters? What would change? Or take a throw-away idea that's better than the whole story.
The funny thing is that when I go stale on a story, I can get re-interested by re-reading the original work. This is independent of how much of the original work I steal. Completely unrelated so that it takes me a minute to remember the original inspiration.
