Her father laughed. "My dear, do not multiply their number to frighten her. You know as well who her chief tutor will be." He leaned forward. "Princess Isabella. Who will be your sister-in-law, after."
"She was widowed fighting an evil sorcerer," said her mother. "She will ensure you can fight."

Karlus nodded.
"How they multiply our problems, these strangers," said Bartholomew. "And our opportunities." He sat back. "Usually, we can learn something without impolitic questions. Not with her. There are wild but very thin rumors. Not even the worst gossip is certain who Lady Floriana is, or what she wants."

She stood still, her eyes closed. Her hair looked more green than the light could account for. Butterflies multiplied about her, red and orange and gold, blue and white, and more than Red could not name. Indeed, the flood of memory assured her that those butterflies were unknown to entomologists.
