The hinge didn’t creak. The moon had set and the untrimmed garden was mostly shadows. Unfortunately one of those shadows was a Grootendorst, and she found it on the second bend instead of the third. She sucked on her cut wrist and wondered how she’d explain the torn blouse.

By now Beth’s coffin was at tree height, and still rising steadily. Pickman heard Leng laughing behind him. The spell demanded his full attention and he daren’t release the powers until it was done, but he’d get revenge for this. And Leng must know he’d try, and didn’t care.
