So, is the heroine Snow White or Sleeping Beauty? Fundamentally, neither, she's a sleeping princess from another tale entirely -- except that I threw in the fairy godmother for her to fall asleep.
At that, opening the story with her is a fundamental change from the other story, which starts with the prince, and the princess is already asleep when he hears of her. Without any explanation of why she (or her kingdom) falls asleep.
But just because I start her with a Sleeping Beauty element doesn't mean I have to have her fall asleep in her parents' castles. (Or one of them -- that was a quick change -- they will not have a whole important castle fall asleep.)
Hmm -- I can deal with the staffing at the other castle -- could get interesting. . . I don't think I can actually make them dwarves, or bandits, or even dragons. . . but they could be more interesting. Especially since the princess is talking about what she does before the falling asleep to prepare for the consequences.
