Half a dozen glasses were set out, next to a bottle of wine. Isabella nodded to them, but glanced at the door again.
Ava sat and crossed her ankles. Her mother would approve of such practice at manners. And point out that Julian sat easily and without glancing about curiously.

“I have three pair of glasses and I can’t find any of them!”

“Only two—remember I rolled over onto one pair last night?”

“Yes. They’re not by the computer, or the nightstand, or the craft table—where are they?!”

“Mom!” called their daughter from the kitchen. “What’s this doing in the flour?”

Another maidservant filled one of the glasses beside her. Maximiana considered a moment and then drank. Reynardette was a problem she had to deal with on her own. Her utility equaled the secrecy with which she was used.
At least, it would never exceed it. It might fall below that.

"We apologize for taking you from your meal," said Princess Aurelie. She gestured at bread, honey, meat, peaches, and wine with glasses. "You can eat as we speak. If that is, you decide to speak with us."
"What is the matter you wish to speak with us on?" said Bellangere.

"He should go looking for enchanted spectacles," said Giles. "Those are different and would let him see everything in the world."
"That," said Rosaleen, very severely, "would depend on what the enchantment was." She hesitated, not remembering another, and then remembered a tale. "It can't see a pin that hid in his hair, for one."

"It's interesting, how secret police chiefs always seem to wear the same sort of glasses with thin wire rims. Himmler and Beria are the obvious ones -- Stalin even called Beria "My Himmler." But before them, the founder of the Okhrana, the Romanov tsarist secret police, also wore wire-rimmed glasses."

"Hmm. Ever seen any picture of old J. Edgar with glasses? Maybe that's why he always avoided wearing glasses in public -- because he didn't want people to think he was turning the FBI into some kind of secret police."
