And then I made the fairy witch make a newly captive princess do all the drudge work and ensure her daughter, and her other captives, are all swans, all the time.
A new enough captive that she doesn't know the witch's secrets. Most captives work as well as the daughter, actually, because they fit the vital point of knowing the secrets of the witch or ogre or dragon or giant. (Or can get them out of him.)
Which means tweaking this part will require development to get around the issue. I think I will have the heroine lament her uselessness. And perhaps discuss all the failures in fairy tales.
Huh. If she brings up the princes who don't save the Sleeping Beauty, that will hit a sore spot.
I think she will stick to the oldest two brothers dying or some such.
